Alexandria is divided in several distinct neighborhoods, each with their own character and amenities.  Some of the major neighborhoods within Alexandria include:

  • Old Town – located in the eastern and southeastern portions of the Alexandria, this is the oldest section of the city known for its historic townhouses, art galleries, antique shops and restaurants.
  • Rosemont – located just to the west of Old Town, Rosemont is the city’s oldest planned residential expansion, developed between 1900 and 1920.  Much of the neighborhood is included in a historic district that showcases early 20th century home building styles.
  • The Berg – located to the north of Old Town are the remnants of a historic, predominantly African American community known as “The Berg”.  The area was originally settled in 1861 by refugees fleeing enslavement, and contains a 260 unit public housing complex that encompasses several blocks.
  • Arlandria – located in the northeastern region of town, Arlandria derives its name from the words “Arlington” and “Alexandria”, reflecting its position on the border between the two municipalities.  The neighborhood is known for its Hispanic, Thai, and Vietnamese-owned bakeries, restaurants and stores.
  • Del Ray – located to the northwest of Old Town, this gentrified neighborhood has grown significantly since the development of the Potomac Yard Shopping Center in the mid-1990s.  It draws tens of thousands of people from around the region during its annual Art on the Avenue main street festival in October.
  • West End – the most suburban area of Alexandria, the West End is comprised of four main areas:  Seminary Hill, Lower Alexandria, The Landmark, and Seminary West.
  • North Ridge – located in the northern region, North Ridge is a residential area with numerous styles of homes developed from the 1930s to the 1960s.
