Capital Fringe Festival 2015 (July 9th to August 2nd)

ADDED ON July 5, 2015 0 COMMENTS

The fun and fabulous Capital Fringe Festival returns in Washington for its 10th consecutive year of bringing independent theater, live music, and unclassified performances. The festival begins July 9, running through July 26, taking place in more than 15 varying venues in the downtown area of DC. This year, the Fringe Festival has an extension week running July 29 to August 2.

Also known as the DC Fringe Festival, this annual performing arts event in Washington, DC features about 135 performances throughout the city. The festival introduces risk-taking art and non-traditional performances to mainstream crowds; patrons experience theater, dance, music, poetry, puppetry, and the like.

A Little History on the Festival

The concept of the festival dates back 60 years to the famed Edinburgh International Festival. The term “fringe” was taken by performance groups excluded from the grand event. Determined to show off their unique works, these companies built makeshift theaters on the outskirts or fringe of the established festival. This Fringe Festival gained a huge number of loyal followers, outstripping the mainstream festival.

The Fringe Festival idea then migrated to Canada in the 1980s. Today, the country boasts Fringe Festivals from one coast to another. And during the early 1990s, the fringe concept was embraced by the United States. Currently, there are annual Fringe Festivals in Orlando, San Francisco, Minneapolis, Chicago, Philadelphia, and even New York.
